About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Grasmere at Red Lion Square, Baldry's Grasmere is a delightful café that perfectly captures the essence of a traditional British tearoom with a vibrant contemporary twist. This charming spot invites visitors to slow down, savor thoughtfully prepared fare, and soak in the warm, welcoming atmosphere that guests repeatedly praise.

The café’s menu is an exquisite celebration of classic comfort food elevated with fresh, local ingredients and meticulous care. From the moment you sink your teeth into their legendary Blue Lady Tea and Fruit Scone, you can tell this isn’t just another café. Customers rave about the scones—light, fluffy, and beautifully baked—the kind that practically melt on your tongue, especially when paired with indulgent cream and jam.

For those seeking hearty delights, Baldry’s inventive takes on British staples shine wonderfully. The Full English Breakfast offers a robust start to any day, but adventurous palates will particularly appreciate dishes like Haggis on Toast with Poached Eggs—a bold, richly flavored choice that stands out as a must-try specialty. The Rarebit with Poached Egg and Bacon is another standout, layering smoky, savory notes that feel like a hug in every bite.

Tea lovers will find themselves in a haven here, with a carefully curated tea selection featuring fragrant blends like Earl Grey, Jasmine, and the uniquely refreshing Blue Lady Tea. The precision poured lattes and the warming Gingerbread and Ginger Cake desserts complete the sensory journey, filling the air with comforting spices and sweetness.

Afternoon Tea at Baldry’s is a celebrated ritual, treasured for the fresh, house-baked cakes that accompany every pot of tea. The Lemon Meringue Pie and Sticky Gingerbread are particular highlights, delivering a satisfying balance of tartness and sweetness that lingers delightfully on the palate. Seasonal crumbles and traditional British puddings like Treacle Tart and Bread & Butter Pudding further attest to the kitchen’s ability to create soulful desserts that feel both nostalgic and fresh.

What truly elevates Baldry's from a simple café to a beloved local gem is the heartfelt hospitality and attention to detail. Guests frequently recount memorable visits punctuated by friendly, attentive service and the joy of finding their furry friends welcomed alongside them—a rare treat that cements Baldry’s as a warm-hearted community hub.

Many visitors arrive weary from nearby hikes, only to be rejuvenated by the café’s cozy outdoor seating basking in sunlight and a menu boasting variety and quality. The combination of freshly brewed coffee, enticing cakes, and freshly prepared savory dishes creates an irresistible allure.

In sum, Baldry's Grasmere is not just a café—it’s a sensory escape, a place where every detail, from the carefully sourced ingredients to the comfortable environment, is designed to make you feel indulged and cared for. Whether you’re pausing for a quick coffee, settling in for a full afternoon tea experience, or seeking a hearty meal after exploring the Lake District, Baldry’s consistently delights and invites you to return again and again.

The jacket potatoes with Heinz beans and tasty bacon with side salad best ever. Goats cheese with cranberry delicious. Loose tea always a bonus. Even the free bottled tap water was good. Great to get our dog in

Mid Hike stop for lunch and a coffee, I got seated quickly in a lovely table outside so I could enjoy the March sunshine. Ordered inside, great menu, vast choice. I had an Americano with cream (hard to find a place that serves cream) and the warm cheese scone with cream cheese and smoked salmon. The food was beautifully fresh and flavoursome and the coffee was lovely. Staff very attentive and friendly. Highly recommend you stop by and enjoy

Best scone I've eaten, wow. Light and fluffy and delicious. Great tea selection too and it's well priced. We were very lucky to get a table at the end of the day after a short queue. Very glad to do so. Well worth the wait. Toilets are a sight to behold as well...

A gem of a place! Beautiful tearoom with a lovely atmosphere and fantastic food. The haggis with poached egg was incredible and a special but should have a permanent place on the menu. The scones were light and fluffy and the best I have had. Will be back to this beautiful tea room.

Lovely place for lunch. We thought it was perhaps tea only based on the sign, but had a nice selection for lunch including both cold and hot options like sandwiches, potatoes, soup - including multiple vegetarian options. Prices were decent, and there as a bit of indoor seating. The sweets and tea selection looked tasty though we didn't try them. Service was good, it's dog friendly inside, and clean toilets. Information on the table about who William Baldry was a nice touch.

I walked in and was greeted by friendly staff who seated me straight away. Usually in different cafes as a solo visitor you get taken to the smallest table. They didn’t do this but gave me a better table, which was nice and impressed me right away. They have a really good selection of teas for all tastes. Mine is strong black tea and there were at least two options there that were perfect for me. I went with Assam tea, which was strong and very similar to an English breakfast tea. It’s nice to have loose leafs in a cafe, which these were. The breakfast was delicious. There was plenty on the plate for around £14. The sausages and bacon were especially of excellent quality. Around the area and in Ambleside I found that in the three places I had a breakfast that the sausage was a good quality Cumberland and the bacon was just as good with the taste and quality. This was true here and it elevated the breakfast to another level compared to what you usually would expect in a cafe. I’d recommend this place for friendly and patient staff that are helpful and good quality food and tea.
